On and off the field, Mike brought a winning leadership to Northwestern College.  During his four all-conference seasons in soccer, “Gundy” was the Eagles’ top scoring force, first as a striker and later as a mid-fielder.  His school records (60 goals and 43 assists) helped make a young, fledgling Northwestern program a winner for the first time, including a first-ever conference championship in 1980.  Mike’s teammates honored his leadership by voting for the one they called “captain” as team MVP both in 1979 and 1981.  Also a four-year letter winner in basketball, Mike helped bring a first-ever NCCAA Division II championship to Northwestern in 1979-'80.  National runner-up finishes followed his next two seasons.  During his one season in tennis, Mike tasted victory again, leading the squad’s number one doubles team to a conference championship.

Mike’s successful leadership endures in his days after Northwestern.  Following ten years of fruitful service as a youth director in the United States, Mike partnered with basketball teammate Brian Miller in planting churches in Brazil for the Evangelical Free Church of America.  Always a team player and leader, Mike continues to serve in Brazil as a theological trainer for national pastors in Brazil.
