Dr. Lindman was a member of the faculty at Northwestern College as it opened on the Roseville campus in 1972, teaching in the physical education department and coaching three women’s sports. She served as the women’s Athletic Director and chair of the department of physical education (1978-1984), the chair of the department of education (1985-1994), Dean of Curriculum and Instruction (1994-1998), and Dean of Academic Programs from 1998 to 2014. Dr. Lindman served as Interim Provost in 2006.
Dr. Lindman was the recipient of the Buckles-Hanna Distinguished Service Award in 2013. Dr. Lindman earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Bethel College (1968), a Bachelor of Science in physical education from the University of Minnesota (1971), a Master of Arts (1978), and PhD from the University of Minnesota in 1994.
Though no win-loss record can be found, the spring of 1976 is unofficially the first year of existence for the University of Northwestern softball program. Barb Lindman owns the distinction of being the program’s first coach as she held the position from 1976 to 1980. Unfortunately, the 1977 campaign and the 1980 campaign are the only two seasons in which an official record was kept. Her 7-5 record in 1977 and 9-7 mark in 1980 totals a 16-12 career coaching record, signifying the highest winning percentage (57%) to this day in the history of the program.
Barb Lindman took over the head coaching reins for Northwestern volleyball in 1975 and started the program off on the right note with a 12-5 record. After experiencing some rougher campaigns, Lindman tallied winning records again in 1979 and 1980 as she would eventually lead Northwestern to the most wins in a single season with an impressive 29-11 overall showing in 1983 and a conference championship to her credit.
