The Reynolds Field fence should be named after Craig Scheithauer for how often he hit baseballs over it during his four years in an Eagles uniform. No other Northwestern player has hit as many home runs as Scheithauer, whose career hits record (171) stood for 14 years before being broken. 15 years after completing his standout tenure in the batter’s box, Craig still owns top five marks in the program for career doubles, triples, runs, runs batted in, and total bases. He is the only Northwestern baseball player to have been named an NCCAA All-American three times.
While home runs are great, Scheithauer hits more for a worthy batting average in his current roles of husband, father and teacher. Husband to Joelle and dad to Carter, Josie and Ciara, Scheithauer has learned to not only practice patience at the plate, but has also grasped godly traits such as unconditional love and forgiveness that were modeled by his Creator along the way. Those characteristics transfer into the public school system where Craig both teaches and coaches, impacting the next generation. Scheithauer gives credit to Northwestern for giving him not only an academic degree but also spiritual direction, helping him understand that his personal faith is a process and a relationship rather than a single event and a list of rules.
