Box Score
ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team found success in its first 77 minutes of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Postseason Tournament contest versus the University of Minnesota Morris, but it was the remaining time that ended the Eagles' 2013 campaign in the semifinal round. UNW scored early to take an advantage for the majority of the matchup, however the Cougars rebounded late in the second half to take the upper hand.
Northwestern held momentum early as the team notched the first shot, quickly countered by the visiting team. It was the Eagles' third offensive chance that did the trick, and a
Matt Flanders (Osceola, Wis./Homeschooled) assist led to a
Joshua Fryc (Harris, Minn./Homeschool) score at the 14:40 mark.
UMM led the charge the rest of the half with 13 attacks in comparison to the home team's four, but the score remained the same in favor of UNW. The defensive backline and
Shane Coleman (Wyoming, Minn./Homeschool) picked up credit for six attacks in the shutout first period, which led to the 1-0 advantage heading into intermission.
The second half began with multiple corner kicks earned by the Purple and Gold. The Cougars pushed back with pressure on the Eagles' end of the pitch, fended off until the 78
th minute. At the 78:51 mark UMM found success first to even the score at 1-1, heading into the final stretch of the ball game.
Minnesota Morris would strike again as time was running low, securing what would end up as the final score of the playoff contest. The Cougar defense would hold strong through the remainder of the game, resulting in an end to UNW's season.
On the Eagle's home field, the visitors outshot the home squad 24-8, but key stops in front of goal led to 11 saves for third-seeded UNW.
Northwestern ended its run with a 10-10-1 overall record, and also posted a 10-4-1 mark in UMAC play. Three different seniors,
Matt Flanders (Osceola, Wis./Homeschooled),
Larry Sinneh (Monrovia, Liberia/Cathedral), and
Joshua Wright (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) played their final game in an Eagle uniform on Tuesday after contributing to this year's campaign that saw UNW secure its best conference finish in at least the past six seasons.
