ST. PAUL, Minn. - The University of Northwestern Men's Soccer team battled hard but came up short on Saturday afternoon, falling 0-4 to Bethany Lutheran in UMAC play.
In the 30th minute, it seemed as though the Eagles would take the lead as Jay'ce Jones (Marina del Rey, Calif./Palisades Charter) earned a penalty kick, something he's made a habit of drawing all season. He stepped up to take it himself, but his shot clipped the outside of the post, just missing the mark for a UNW advantage. Ten minutes later, the Vikings capitalized on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box, finding an open net on the back side of the goal to take a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Despite the deficit, the Eagles continued to push forward. With 15 minutes remaining in the game, Braeden Morrow (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) surged into the box, leading Jones with a pass that set up a dangerous look; his shot forced a strong save from the BLC keeper. Just a few minutes later, Dylan Anaya (Eagan, Minn./Two Rivers) collected the ball off a corner and ripped a deep, powerful shot that required a leaping save to keep it out. Bethany went on to score three more solid goals in the second half to secure the win.
Jones led the Eagles' attack with four shots, one on target. Dylan Anaya (Eagan, Minn./Two Rivers) added two shots, while Jared Mojardin (Denver, Colo./Northeast Early College) contributed one. Hayden DeAnnuntis (Ferndale, Wash./Ferndale) secured three saves in goal.
Northwestern will have a week break before returning to the pitch in New Ulm, Minnesota, on October 25th. They will be taking on Martin Luther starting at 3:30 PM.
