MANKATO, Minn. - The University of Northwestern Men's Soccer team traveled to Mankato to take on the second-ranked team in the UMAC on Saturday. Bethany Lutheran showcased its offensive firepower, scoring three goals in each half to hand the Eagles a 6-0 loss.
The Vikings got on the scoreboard in the sixth minute before Northwestern put together a promising offensive opportunity ten minutes later. Hayden McConnell (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) connected with Daniel DeWalt (Nathrop, Colo./Buena Vista), who played Josiah Mezey (Monument, Colo./Village) into the box. Mezey attempted to cut back inside to create space for a shot, but the Viking defense closed in, and his attempt was saved by the goalkeeper.
Bethany Lutheran added goals in the 26th and 39th minutes to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
The Viking defense continued to limit Northwestern's offensive opportunities in the second half, holding the Eagles without a shot attempt over the final 45 minutes. Bethany Lutheran added three more goals to secure the 6-0 victory.
Mezey recorded Northwestern's lone shot attempt in 38 minutes of action. Isaac Johnson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) started in goal for the Eagles, making five saves through 82 minutes before Georden Tschida (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) entered for the final eight minutes.
Northwestern will remain on the road for a nonconference matchup against Maranatha Baptist on Tuesday, October 20, at 1:00 PM.
