ST. PAUL, Minn. - The University of Northwestern Men's Soccer team battled UW–Superior for their Homecoming matchup on Saturday. The Eagles showed resilience against one of the UMAC's premier programs. Despite several familiar faces missing from the starting lineup, the Eagles turned in a stronger defensive performance than their previous meeting with the Yellowjackets, improving from a 1–9 result earlier in the season to a 0–4 final this time around.
In the opening half, UW-Superior took eight shots but was held to just two goals midway through the period. Northwestern's defense tightened up and denied additional chances, though the Eagles were unable to register a shot before halftime.
Coming out of the break, Luis Villalobos (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) created a golden opportunity for UNW right in front of the goal, forcing an outstanding save from the UWS keeper. The Yellowjackets added two more goals throughout the second half, but Northwestern continued to battle. With 21 minutes remaining, Julian Ortiz (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) nearly converted off a free kick after the ball bounced around in the box, sending his shot just wide.
Villalobos, Ortiz, and Cutis Tinjum recorded the Eagles' three shot attempts. In goal, Hayden DeAnnuntis (Ferndale, Wash./Ferndale) anchored the defense with three saves, while the back line of Noah Chan (Brandon, S.D./Brandon Valley), Spencer Ford (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake), Carter Dieerich, and Braeden Morrow (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) made a strong impact in slowing Superior's prolific attack.
Northwestern will return to action on Wednesday, October 15, facing North Central at 3:30 PM at Elliot Park Field in downtown Minneapolis.
