ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – On Saturday afternoon, the University of Northwestern Men's Soccer team battled Crown College to a 1-1 draw. The scoring action took place in the first 7 minutes and the final 11 minutes, making the bulk of the game a true rock fight.
The Eagles struck first as Jared Mojardin (Denver, Colo./Northeast Early College) netted his fifth goal of the season. After Northwestern dispossessed the Polars, Curtis Tinjum (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) found himself at the top of the box and slipped a perfectly timed pass to Mojardin, who buried the shot to give UNW the early lead. Jay'ce Jones (Marina del Rey, Calif./Palisades Charter) and Tinjum continued to create opportunities up the field throughout the first half, but the Crown keeper came up with key saves to keep it a one-goal game.
In the second half, Northwestern continued to seek out scoring opportunities. Two of their best looks came from Mojardin right around the 70 minute mark. Jones broke through the Polar defense and connected with Mojardin in the box, but the ball was deflected out on the shot. Moments later, Jones was fouled just outside the box, setting up a free kick nearly identical to the setup of a goal from earlier this season. Mojardin stepped up but fired just high. The Polars' homecoming crowd lifted the team late down the stretch as Crown scored the equalizer with 11 minutes to play to seal the 1-1 draw.
Despite several great scoring opportunities, UNW only tallied 10 shot attempts, while the Eagles' defense held the Polars to just 5 shots. Hayden DeAnnuntis (Ferndale, Wash./Ferndale) came away with 3 saves in his 90 minutes in goal. Mojardin scored, Jones had 3 shot attempts, while Tijum delivered the lone assist with 2 shots as well.
The Eagles will take the pitch again on Tuesday, October 7, taking on the Rams of North Central. The game will begin at 4:30 PM at Reynolds Field.
