Northwestern Trio Earns UMAC Athlete of the Week

ST. PAUL, Minn. - For the second-consecutive week, three University of Northwestern student-athletes have been honored by the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference as conference Athletes of the Week. Men's Golf, Men's Tennis and Women's Track and Field were the three sports represented in this week's awards. Northwestern has now claimed 60 UMAC Athlete of the Week awards in the 2025-26 school year.

Carson Besonen (Madison, Minn./Lac qui Parle Valley) picks up UNW's first Men's Golf Athlete of the Week award of the spring season and the first of his young career. The freshman tied for sixth place at Nebraska Wesleyan's 'Howl at the Hill' event, finishing with a score of +5 after firing a two-under 70 on the second and final day of the competition. The Eagles finished in a tie for fourth out of nine teams.

On the court, Carson Haack (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) took home his fourth-career UMAC Men's Tennis North Division Athlete of the Week honor, and his third this season. The junior set the tone in Northwestern's first men's tennis win over UW-Superior since 2019, winning his No. 1 doubles match, 6-2, and his No. 1 singles match, 6-1, 7-5. UNW won the team match 4-3, needing every last point Haack provided from the top of the lineup.

Alaina Wojtowski (Oshkosh, Wis./Valley Christian) is becoming a mainstay in the UMAC weekly awards, having now won the Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week award twice, in addition to Indoor Track Athlete of the Week once. The freshman broke another program record Wednesday at the Gustie Twilight, setting a new outdoor 200-meter dash mark of 26.03. She finished in fifth place in the event, behind four Division I runners. The rookie also finished fifth in the 100 with a time of 12.75. This is the third-consecutive week an Eagle has received the Women's Outdoor Track nod, as Wojtowski did so on April 7th and Emery Maki (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) did last week.
