ST. PAUL, Minn. - The University of Northwestern Men's Soccer Team battled hard in its home opener against Bethel University on Friday night, but the Royals struck late in each half to secure a 2-0 win. Bethel opened the scoring with just 22 seconds left in the first half and added another with eight minutes remaining in the game.
The Eagles put together 10 total shots, including three on frame, with their best closest look coming in the 97th minute when Julian Ortiz's (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) strike missed by mere inches.
One of the story lines of the night came before kickoff, as Jared Mojardin (Denver, Colo./Northeast Early College) wasn't announced in the starting lineup; however, the sophomore definitely started and made his presence felt. Mojardin led the Eagles with four shots, three of them on target, proving to be a consistent threat in the attack. Jay'ce Jones (Marina del Rey, Calif./Palisades Charter) added two shots of his own in his UNW debut. Also in his first game for the Eagles, freshman Hayden DeAnnuntis (Ferndale, Wash./Ferndale) was outstanding in goal, recording nine saves while allowing just two goals against the MIAC's fourth-ranked squad.
The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday, September 3, with a 7:30 p.m. road matchup against another MIAC opponent, Augsburg University.
