Men's soccer locks up #2 seed as a result of 1-1 tie

Box Score

MORRIS, Minn. – It took 110 minutes, and even then it wasn't decided, as the University of Northwestern men's soccer team ended its regular season finale in a 1-1 tie with the University of Minnesota Morris Saturday afternoon. Even with the tie, the Eagles locked up the second seed in next week's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Postseason Tournament.

Neither team would have offensive opportunities early, as Northwestern was the first team to get a shot off in the 20th minute. UMM would return the favor over 12 minutes later, but queue the 36:30 mark and UNW would be the first team on the board, courtesy of a Josua Wolderich header goal. The score, Wolderich's first of the weekend after notching two assists in Friday's victory, came as a result of a Mark Habeck (Winona, Minn./Winona) pass and would provide the Eagles' with an upper hand heading into halftime.

The second period featured more exchanges between teams, but the score remained the same. In the 75th minute, a Cougar goal and secure the eventual final score of the contest. As the clock struck 90:00, the 1-1 matchup was headed into extra time.

In the first overtime period, Minnesota Morris was the only team to even get a shot off, but a Shane Coleman (Wyoming, Minn./Homeschool) save extended the regular season out even longer as the second extra period began. This time the home team would get a pair of attack opportunities, but neither found the net and the game ended in a gridlocked 1-1 tie.

The Eagles came out on stop in the offensive battle, posting six shots on goal in comparison to their opponents' two. In the overall count, Minnesota Morris won the tally by one shot.

Northwestern (10-9-1 overall, 10-3-1 UMAC) secured a home playoff match with Saturday's outcome, and the team will face a very familiar opponent in Minnesota Morris. A 2 p.m. contest will be played at Reynolds Field, with the winner of that game advancing to play the winner of the College of St. Scholastica and Bethany Lutheran College matchup.
