ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Northwestern College men's soccer team used a strong offensive effort to push their 2012 win streak to five games in Thursday's 3-0 win over Northland College. The Eagles remain unbeaten in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) contests after outshooting the Lumberjacks 24-3.
Joel Ottley (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) put NWC on the scoreboard early after his deflection goal off the Northland goalkeeper gave the home team a 1-0 lead at the 7:05 mark. The Purple and Gold kept attacking but were unable to notch another goal until
Peter Olson (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) dished the ball to
Sam Mann (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Central) who found the back of the net with less than two minutes left in regulation. Mann has now scored seven goals in this year's campaign and at least one in every Northwestern victory.
Continuing with what has become a common theme of the season, the Eagles scored again quickly when Ottley netted his second goal of the evening off a Mann pass, lifting the team to a 3-0 advantage.
Shane Coleman (Wyoming, Minn./Homeschool) earned his second consecutive shutout in Thursday's game thanks in part to a NWC defense that allowed one shot on goal. Coleman has now tallied three shutouts over the course of the season's seven games.
Northwestern (5-2 overall, 3-0 conference) will look to continue their successful start to the year on Saturday when the Eagles will travel to Duluth, Minn. for a 2:30 p.m. UMAC competition against the College of St. Scholastica. The Saints are currently 6-2 on the year, including 4-0 in conference play,
