ST. PAUL – The Northwestern College men's soccer team clinched both its third straight win and a berth into the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) post-season tournament with a 1-0 victory over Crown College on Friday afternoon.
The first half featured runs of shots from both teams as the Eagles made eight offensive attacks on goal while withstanding four from the Storm. Both goalkeepers held their own between the pipes, combining for 12 saves in the first 45 minutes of play and keeping the game scoreless heading into intermission.
The story remained much the same in the second period as the battle to be the first team on the Reynolds Field scoreboard continued up until the 76:48 mark when junior
Larry Sinneh (Monrovia, Liberia/Cathedral) earned his first career goal courtesy of a
Joshua Wolderich (Ferndale, Wash./Hillcrest Academy) assist, his first in a NWC uniform.
Following Sinneh's score, Northwestern continued to control ball possession and finished the contest with their 10th win of the season. The Eagles combined for 24 total shots, an even 12 in each half, in comparison to the Storm's nine. The home team also owned a victory in shots on goal, owning a 18-5 advantage.
As the final man behind a strong NWC defensive effort,
Shane Coleman (Wyoming, Minn./Homeschool) grabbed four saves en route to his seventh win and sixth shutout of his sophomore campaign.
The Purple and Gold will return to Reynolds Field for the finale of the 2012 regular season as it takes on the University of Minnesota Morris in a 12 p.m. contest.
After Friday's win, Northwestern (10-7-2, 8-3-2 UMAC) has earned a spot in the conference postseason tournament which will begin the opening round of play on Tuesday, October 30.
