Box Score ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northwestern College men's soccer team remained in contention to host a UMAC Tournament semifinal contest after the Eagles defeated Northland College 2-1 on Friday afternoon. The Eagles gained a quick 2-0 lead that held strong despite a LumberJacks goal in the second half.
Jerome Horton (Monrovia, Liberia/St. Paul Central) (Monrovia, Libya/St. Paul Central) scored the Eagles' first goal of the game, putting through a shot after taking a pass from
Sam Mann (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Central) (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Central) in the 14th minute.
Stephen Ricks (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) added what would prove to be a needed insurance goal for NWC at the 18:46 mark, as Northland's Mackenzie Marron scored his team's lone goal in the 68th minute.
Northwestern out-shot the LumberJacks 17-3 throughout the 90-minute game as
Eric Bocan (Anoka, Minn./Meadow Creek) (Anoka, Minn./Meadow Creek) had to record one save en route to the victory.
At 9-7-2 overall and 8-2-1 in UMAC action, the Eagles have 25 points in the conference standings, two points behind second place University of Minnesota Morris. An NWC win over the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday and a Morris loss to Bethany Lutheran would propel the Eagles into second place, which would grant the Purple & Gold an opportunity to host a first round game for the conference tournament. Northwestern and St. Scholastica will kick off at 3 p.m. in Duluth on Saturday.
