ST. PAUL (Oct. 17, 2008) – The Northwestern College men's soccer team scored their highest goal total in a UMAC game this season en route to a 4-0 win over Northland College. Three second-half goals by the Eagles within 13 minutes of one another sealed the victory.
Dan Schumann (Ham Lake, MN/Concordia Academy) (Ham Lake, Minn./Concordia Academy) scored Northwestern's first goal of the game, which eventually became the game-winner. Schumann's goal at the 10:54 mark was his first of the season.
Following a 1-0 lead going into halftime, the Eagles opened up a huge scoring attack, as Cal Kanowitz (St. Paul, Minn./Johnson) and Matt Olson (St. Paul, Minn./Concordia Academy) (St. Paul, Minn./Concordia Academy) scored back-to-back goals in the 54th and 55th minutes. Kanowitz's goal was assisted by Phil Lodien (Kalispell, Mont./Stillwater Christian), while Olson's score came by way of a Schumann throw-in.
Aaron Thelen (Baxter, MN/Brainered High School) (Brainerd, Minn./Baxter) added yet another insurance goal for Northwestern in the 67th minute, courtesy of a pass from Benjamin Fast (Eagan, Minn./Henry Sibley) (Eagan, Minn./Henry Sibley).
Northwestern held an advantage in the shots category, taking 16 compared to Northland's 10.
Three goalkeepers saw action for the Eagles, including Danny King (Willmar, MN/Willmar High School) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar), who worked 68 minutes for the win.
Northwestern (6-8-0, 5-4-0 UMAC) will host the current UMAC leader in the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday, Oct. 18. The Saints will come to Reynolds Field for a showdown at 2 p.m.
