Frazell Ties for Top Spot as UNW Men Open Season

ST. MICHAEL, Minn. - The University of Northwestern Men's Golf team returns plenty of talent in 2026-27, but is tasked with replacing two stellar players in Shane Seiffert (Corcoran, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) and Jakob Swanson. Both were on the scene at Fox Hollow Golf Club on Tuesday for the UNW Invite, Swanson as a coach for Northwestern and Seiffert as a fan. The duo was able to see the season debut of the Eagles, who finished in second place with a team score of 299 (+11), three shots back of Bethany Lutheran College. UNW's "B" team turned in a good performance itself, finishing in a tie for fifth place out of 13 competing teams, including the entire UMAC, plus Carleton College.

Luke Frazell (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) followed up a strong freshman season by tying for the top spot in the field of 70 competitors on Tuesday, making a staggering six birdies en route to a 69 (-3). The four-way tie at the top was won by UW-Superior's Blu Anderson, who claimed the scorecard playoff win because of a birdie on the par-four 13th hole, which Frazell bogeyed. Carson Moscoso (Maple Grove, Minn./Maranatha Christian Academy) was the only other Eagle under par with a career-best 71 (-1), which included five birdies and tied him for fifth. The mark shattered the sophomore's career-low by seven strokes. Carson Besonen (Madison, Minn./Lac qui Parle Valley) and Tanner Doeden (Fargo, N.D./Park Christian) each carded three birdies on their way to scores of 77 (+5, T-24th) and 79 (+7, T-31st), respectively. Marshall Kraft (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) rounded out Northwestern's "A" team by turning in an 80 (+8) in his collegiate debut.

Northwestern's "B" team put up a great fight in a tie for fifth place, proving the depth of Billy Aune's squad is legitimate. Freshman Eliah Harding (Prentice, Wis./Prentice) paced the "B" squad, carding four birdies in his debut to place sixth with an even-par 72. Noah Frazell (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) started strong and finished strong, firing a 75 (+3) with four birdies to tie for 14th, while Carter Dilly (Henning, Minn./Henning) tied for 24th with a score of 77 (+5). Jackson Courteau (Otsego, Minn./Rogers) was the final countable score for the"B" team, tallying a 79 (+7), while Carson Mersberger (Kiel, Wis./Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah) was outside the team total at 89 (+17).

Four more Eagles competed as individuals and held their own, led by Andrew Carlson's (Mosinee, Wis./Mosinee) 76 (+4), which featured three birdies and tied the junior for 16th. Noah Carlson (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) was just one shot back of his fellow namesake at 77 (+5, T-24th) with three birdies, while Tanner McNamee (Blaine, Minn./Legacy Christian Academy) turned in an 80 (+8), highlighted by a hole-out from 90 yards for birdie on the 13th hole. Finishing off UNW's day was Trevor Zenk (Forest Lake, Minn./Legacy Christian Academy), who carded an 81 (+9).

Northwestern will face off against its conference foes once again on Thursday, September 10th at the UMAC Preview in Becker, Minnesota.
