Men's Golf Logs Best-Ever NCCAA Finish, Besonen and Doeden Earn All-America

PALM COAST, Fla. - The University of Northwestern Men's Golf team comes into this week's National Christian College Athletic Association Men's Golf National Championship riding a lot of momentum as champions of its last two events, including the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Championship. Playing in the NCCAA Championship for the second-consecutive year as a team, UNW hopes to continue that momentum and make some noise at the national stage to conclude its 2026 fall slate. Follow along with live scoring from Hammock Beach Resort all week here.

Day One

The Eagles powered through some ups and downs to come out of the opening round in good position, alone in third place with a score of 312 (+24). Northwestern trails Ottawa (AZ) and Wayland Baptist, who are tied at the top of the leaderboard, by eight strokes each. Tanner Doeden (Fargo, N.D./Park Christian) was the leader of the pack for UNW on Monday, making birdieing his opening hole and making 14 pars to come in at 75 (+3), which puts him in a tie for second place, four strokes behind Ottawa's Corley McLernon. Three other Eagles are in the top 20 following round one, including Carson Moscoso (Maple Grove, Minn./Maranatha Christian Academy), who birdied the ninth hole and finished tied for 14th at 78 (+6) for the day. Luke Frazell (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) is tied for 17th after birdieing the 18th hole for a round of 79 (+7), while Carson Besonen (Madison, Minn./Lac qui Parle Valley) finds himself in 19th place after carding an 80 (+8), the first time this season the sophomore has not been in the 70's. Rounding out Northwestern's lineup was Carter Dilly (Henning, Minn./Henning), who led UNW with a pair of birdies to shoot 85 (+13), which ties him for 33rd among the 47 golfers.

After being in the early wave of tee times on Monday, the Eagles will be in the late(r) wave for Tuesday's second round. Dilly will kick things off from the Conservatory Course at 8:48 CT (9:48 ET).

Day Two

Tuesday's second round was an up-and-down one for UNW, who at one point was within two strokes of the lead. Ultimately, the Eagles did end up improving their score from Monday with a 310 (+22), but fell in the standings to fourth place, 16 shots off the lead. Doeden was excellent once again, shooting a two-under 34 on the front nine and adding a third birdie on the back for a 74 (+2), which puts him in a tie for fourth place at +5 overall, just two strokes behind McLernon. Besonen had a bounce-back day on Tuesday, using three birdies to shave five strokes off his first-round total with a 75 (+3). The sophomore is now tied for 14th at +11 for the week. Moscoso finds himself in solo 17th with 18 holes to play, after a 79 (+7) brought his overall score to +13, while Dilly's 82 (+10) with three birdies was the final counting score of the day for Northwestern. Luke Frazell (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) rounded out the day with a 92 (+20), including a birdie on the par-four 15th hole.

Tee times for the third and final round of the NCCAA National Championship will begin Wednesday morning at 7:00 AM CT (8:00 AM ET).

Day Three

Heavy winds provided another obstacle for the UNW men on the third and final day of play, but the Eagles were able to persevere and achieve their best-ever finish in six appearances at the NCCAA National Championship. A 318 (+31) solidified Northwestern's spot in fourth place out of nine teams with a three-round total of +76. Ottawa (AZ) wound up defeating Wayland Baptist in a team playoff to be crowned the national champion. UNW achieved something else for the first time this week: multiple NCCAA All-Americans. Jakob Swanson, who is now an assistant coach with the team, was the program's first All-American last season, earned by placing in the top 10 of the championship. Wednesday, he welcomed Doeden and Besonen to the club, who tied for eighth and 10th, respectively.

Doeden, who was a mainstay in the top 10 all week, made a birdie on the first hole en route to a 79 (+7), bringing his 54-hole score to +12. The sophomore finished the fall season with every round at 80 or better. Besonen was the low Eagle of the day, carding a birdie on each side to fire a 74 (+2), putting him at +13 for the tournament. Moscoso finished in a tie for 21st after a final-round 85 (+13) brought his final tally to +26, while Dilly turned in his best 18 of the week with an 81 (+9), placing him 30th. Frazell's score of 84 (+12) on Wednesday tied him for 36th at +39 for the week.

Up Next

With the fall season in the books, Northwestern will be off until the spring, when they will begin preparations for the NCAA Division III National Tournament in May. It will be the first time in a decade UNW will participate in the event after being crowned UMAC champion earlier this month. The full spring schedule will be announced at a later date.
