MORRIS, Minn. - In a Wednesday afternoon matchup against the University of Minnesota-Morris, the University of Northwestern men's soccer team dominated much of the play but had to settle for a 1-1 draw after a late exchange of goals.
Despite controlling possession and peppering the Cougars' net with chances, UNW trailed after Morris broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute. The Eagles wasted no time in responding. Just two minutes later, Jay'ce Jones (Marina del Rey, Calif./Palisades Charter) delivered his fourth goal in two games, burying the equalizer off a corner kick from Jared Mojardin (Denver, Colo./Northeast Early College). The kick from Mojardin pinballed around inside the box before landing at Jones' feet, where he calmly finished to level the score. The UNW bench, along with the UNW women's team warming up nearby, erupted at the sight of the Northwestern goal.
The Eagles piled up opportunities all afternoon, outshooting Morris 26-7 and earning nine corner kicks with 12 total set-piece looks. Shots flew high, wide, and off the post, while several others were denied by the Cougars' goalkeeper. Jones led the charge with his goal and six shots, Mojardin added seven, Dylan Anaya (Eagan, Minn./Two Rivers) tallied three, and David Kobielush (Chaska, Minn./Southwest Christian), Braeden Morrow (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North), and Simeon Friesen (Mounds View, Minn./Homeschool) each added two. Hayden DeAnnuntis (Ferndale, Wash./Ferndale) recorded five saves in goal.
With the result, UNW and Morris are now tied for fourth in the UMAC standings, a quarter of the way through conference play. The Eagles return to action on Saturday, October 4, when they travel to Crown College for a 1:00 PM kickoff; the first of three Northwestern athletic events hosted at Crown that day.
