Men's Track and Field Turns in Multiple PRs at the Maday Classic

SUPERIOR, Wis.- The University of Northwestern Men's Track and Field team was back indoors on Saturday as they competed in the Maday Classic hosted by fellow UMAC institution, the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The UMAC Indoor Championships will be taking place in exactly two weeks inside the Dr. Lydia C. Thering Fieldhouse (which was also the site of Saturday's Maday Classic). As the Eagles' inch closer to that championship event, they were looking forward to Saturday's opportunity to continue to improve their times/distances on the track and in the field. Saturday's trip to Superior brought the Eagles multiple season and personal bests that will help them continue to build momentum as they near the end of the indoor season. John Shevchuk (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) is an experienced runner for the Eagles and he understands the importance of peaking at the right time of the season. As his team enters the final weeks of the indoor season, the veteran is starting to peak on the track. He was the only Eagle to qualify for the 60M Dash Finals and he finished in second place overall with a season best time of 7.19 seconds. Shevchuk came up just short of his personal best in the event which is 7.11 seconds.

A trio of Eagles competed in the 200M Dash. Jah'Kiing Joseph (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Heritage) led the way and landed in the top ten of the event. The freshman finished in seventh place overall with a time of 23.59 seconds. Ashton Lofton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Colorado Springs Christian) and Michael Pough Jr. (Jacksonville, Fla./Joshua Christian Academy) were behind him but each turned in PR's in the event. Lofton's time was 26.71 seconds and Pough Jr. finished in 31.24 seconds.

John Thomas III (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) was the only Eagle to compete in the 400M Dash and his time of 1:02.82 landed him in 13th place overall.

The Eagles' success in the sprinting events culminated in their 4X200M Relay team's second place finish. The team of Joseph, Lofton, Shevchuk, and Thomas III finished with a time of 1:41.48.

The long distance events also saw UNW athletes turn in personal best times. Joshua Ringsmuth (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) recorded a PR in the 800M Run with a time of 2:10.45. That put him in 13th place overall. Nathan Eikom (Eagan, Minn./Homeschool) was right behind him in 15th place with a time of 2:15.50. Eikom also competed in the 1 Mile Run and finished with a PR of 4:58.80, just sneaking under the five minute mark.

Jah'Kiing Joseph's (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Heritage) strong day continued in the Long Jump where he finished in the top five with a distance of 6.08m. Michael Pough Jr. (Jacksonville, Fla./Joshua Christian Academy) threw a distance of 7.90m in the Shot Put and Mark Akert (Chesterton, Ind./Homeschool) was right behind him at 7.45m. Akert threw a distance of 9.65m in the Weight Throw.

The Eagles will compete twice next weekend as their season continues to roll on towards the UMAC Indoor Championships. On Friday, February 16th UNW will compete in the Snowshoe Open at the University of Minnesota and on Saturday, February 17th the team will be at the Gene Glader Invite hosted by Bethel University.
