Box Score ST. PAUL, MINN.- The University of Northwestern Men's Soccer team played their 2022 home opener on Monday night when they hosted Wartburg College. The visiting Knights defeated the hometown Eagles 5-0.
The defenses from both sides were stingy to start the game as the first twenty minutes of play went by scoreless. However, Wartburg would score in the 21
st and 26
th minutes to take a 2-0 lead that they would never surrender. There would be no more goals scored in the frame and the Eagles trailed by two going into halftime.
Within the first eight minutes of the second half, Wartburg had doubled their lead. Goals in the 48
th and 53
rd minutes gave the visitors a 4-0 lead. The Knights would add one more in the 70
th minute to bring the game to its final score of 5-0.
Isaac Long (Los Osos, Calif./Morro Bay) got his first start of the season in goal for UNW and tallied five saves in the contest.
Andrew Skoglund (Northfield, Minn./Skoglund Academy) would also play in net for the Eagles.
Jonathan-Thomas Olsen (Modesto, Calif./James Enochs High) got off two shots in the game for the Eagles.
UNW will have a single day's rest before playing another contest at Reynolds Field on Wednesday, September 7
th against Augsburg. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 P.M. start.
