ASHLAND, Wisc.- The University of Northwestern Men's Soccer team made the trip to Wisconsin (for the second time this week) to take on the Northland College Lumberjacks. It was an extremely competitive game that ended in a 1-1 tie. The Eagles move to 3-3-1 in UMAC play this season.
Despite the long trip, the Eagles showed that they were ready to play early in the contest. The Eagles drew first blood as the road team as
Joey McMillin (Hugo, Minn./Centennial) scored his first goal of the season only ten-plus minutes into the game. The Eagles' offense created a scoring opportunity, and the Lumberjacks were called for a penalty within their own box. The Eagles' were rewarded with a penalty kick, and
Joey McMillin (Hugo, Minn./Centennial) was chosen to take it. The sophomore did not disappoint. He buried it and the Eagles came into Ashland and took an early 1-0 lead.
The Eagles then played solid soccer against a very good Northland team in the first half. The Lumberjacks were able to fire off five shots in the opening half but were not able to score as the Eagles clung to that slim lead going into the break. In the second half, the Eagles continued to play well. They outshot the Lumberjacks 9-7 in the second half. However, Northland did find a way to tie the game up with a goal in the 50
th minute. Despite each team getting some scoring opportunities, the game would end deadlocked at one goal apiece.
The game ended in a tie, and so did the shot total. Each squad fired off 12 shots in the contest which is a great example of how evenly matched of a game this was. The teams also had the exact same number of fouls, as you would be hard pressed to find a game as evenly matched as this one was.
Andrew Skoglund (Northfield, Minn./Skoglund Academy) played a nice game in goal for the Eagles, coming away with six saves in the game.
Joey McMillin (Hugo, Minn./Centennial) led the Eagles with three shots in the game while
Jonathan-Thomas Olsen (Modesto, Calif./James Enochs High) and
Curtis Tinjum (Wausau, Wisc./Wausau West) each attempted two shots in the contest.
After two consecutive games on the road, the Eagles are back at home for their next contest. UNW hosts North Central at Reynolds Field on Tuesday, October 11
