Men's Soccer Records Third Consecutive Shutout in a 4-0 Win Over Martin Luther

Box Score NEW ULM, Minn.- The UNW Men's Soccer Team played their third game in five days as they traveled to New Ulm to take on Martin Luther in a UMAC contest. It was an offensive explosion for the Eagles as they won the match 4-0 to improve to 2-1-1 in conference play.

The scoring started early as Alejandro Alfaro (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) scored his second goal of the season in the 17th minute. It was a set piece finish for Alfaro as he put the ball in the low, left corner off of a free kick outside of the box. Both of Alfaro's goals this season have come during conference play.

The scoring slowed down throughout the majority of the first half, but the Eagles made some more noise just before the halftime whistle. Garrett Miers (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) forced a turnover and scored his first goal of the season with 24 seconds remaining in the first half.

The scoring continued early on in the second half as Aaron Hill (New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View) delivered a pass on time and on target to Koby Wesselink (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar High School) who tucked the ball in under the crossbar for his team leading third goal of the season.

Jonathan-Thomas Olsen (Modesto, Calif./James Enochs High) would deliver the final blow in the 73rd minute as he fired a shot into the low, right corner to give the Eagles the 4-0 lead that would hold until the final whistle. The goal was Olsen's second of the season.

The Eagles continued the theme of outshooting their UMAC opponents by a wide margin as they outshot the Knights 23-4. The Eagles also won the shots on goal category 11-1.

Austin Gunkel (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View), the Eagle goalkeeper, is the two-time reigning UMAC Defensive Player of the Week and contributed to a third consecutive shutout.

UNW will look to continue this positive momentum as they travel to Mankato on Saturday, October 2nd for a conference battle with Bethany Lutheran. This marks an important matchup for the Eagles, as the Vikings were selected second in the UMAC Preseason Poll.
