Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The University of Northwestern women's volleyball team opened up their spring season Wednesday evening against Mayville State University. The Eagles were victorious in quick fashion, sweeping the Comets, 25-16, 25-22, 25-18.
Wednesday's match was the first spring contest for both teams and the third time this year the Eagles and Comets battled. Three UNW players were highlighted for their accomplishments in the fall season;
Marylyn Schroyer (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) and
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) both surpassed the 1,000 dig mark, while setter,
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) recorded her 3,000th assist to rank her fourth all-time in career assists.
With the win, Northwestern moves to 15-5 on the season, while the Comets fall to 13-4. Senior, outside hitter,
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) recorded her career high digs with 27.
The first set came easy for the Eagles as they recorded 13 kills and 12 assists. The first four points were awarded to UNW before a Comet point. The Eagles went on a six point run to go up on Mayville 17-8. Northwestern never trailed and were led by senior,
Kalley Schwitters' (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) five kills.
Set two UNW found themselves up 6-3 before the Comets fought their way back and took the lead mid set. The Eagles biggest deficit came by three points before they connected on multiple plays to take the lead back, 19-18. The last few points proved difficult as Mayville fought their way back to tie things at 22. Ultimately, Northwestern pulled away to take the second set 25-22.
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) added 10 assists, while
Gabby Straub (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) had five kills.
Marylyn Schroyer (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) recorded 11 more digs.
Mayville took a four point run to begin set number three before the Eagles made a comeback to tie things up at six. UNW found themselves on top 17-12 and ultimately won the match 3-0 with a 25-17 win.
Gabby Straub (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) ended the night with 13 kills,
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) added 12 and
Kendra Hardy (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) had nine.
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) added 35 assists to her total,
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) had 27 digs and
Marylyn Schroyer (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) added 24.
The Eagles next matchup will be at home as they welcome North Central University on March 6 for their first conference game, gametime slated for 1 pm.
