UNW Volleyball Back in Action as They Host Mayville State

Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The University of Northwestern volleyball team was back in action Saturday morning when Mayville State University came to town from Mayville, North Dakota. The Eagles were coming in on a 4 game winning streak while Mayville State has taken their last 5 games as well. In what was a back and forth match for most of the day, the Eagles fell to the Comets in 4, losing the match 3-1.

Northwestern 1, Mayville State 3 (25-21, 19-25, 24-26, 22-25)

The Eagles started set one off with a bang, going up on the Comets 8-3 early on. The Comets would not go away though, eventually tying it up and even taking the lead. Both teams would continue to trade points and brought it to a tie at 19 before the Eagles would close out the set with a 6-2 to take it 25-21.

Set two would start off trading points, but the Comets would start to pull away going up 20-13 at one point. They would win that set 19-25. Set three had the Eagles and Comets trading points. The comets would go on to pull away at the end and take the set 26-24.

The final set had the Comets leading for most of it. UNW failed to take the lead at any point in the set and lost it 25-22, losing the match 3-1.

UNW finished the match with 63 kills and a shooting percentage of .134. Kendra Hardy (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) would be the team leader in that department with 18, while also adding seven digs. Lucy Pelzel (St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) would finish with 12 kills while sophomore Gabby Straub (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) would end the match with 10.

Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) was your assist leader for the match, finishing with 41 while also adding 14 digs. Junior Hope Kapelke (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) would add 12 assists for the match with seven kills. Marylyn Schroyer (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) would end the match with 5 assists while also having 45 digs for the Eagles.

The Eagles are now 4-3 on the 2020 season.

Northwestern will look to get back on track next Saturday, October 3rd when they head down to Jamestown, North Dakota to take on Briar Cliff University and the University of Jamestown.
