UNW To Host Judson in NCCAA Regional Tournament Saturday

ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team (21-6) will continue its historic season Saturday when Judson University (15-15) visits the Ericksen Center for a National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Regional Tournament contest. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m., with the winner advancing to the NCCAA National Tournament.

The Eagles are looking to make back-to-back appearances at the NCCAA National Tournament after defeating Lincoln Christian University a season ago in the regional round. The national tournament will be held on the campus of Grace College in Winona Lake, Ind.

UNW put together a strong run in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season play, compiling a 14-2 record to earn the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. Northwestern fell to the top-seeded University of Wisconsin-Yellowjackets in the tournament final last Saturday. Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) (First Team), Regan Cooper (Pella, Iowa/Pella) (Second Team) and Jessica Cole (Altoona, Iowa/Southeast Polk) (Honorable Mention) were all recognized in the conference postseason awards release.

Berglund is averaging a team-high 12.4 points per game, while shooting better than 50 percent from the floor. For her efforts this season, she was named the NCCAA North Central Region Player of Year and selected to the first team of the release. Cooper was also a first team honoree, while junior Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) was named NCCAA North Central Region Honorable Mention. Head coach Aaron Kahl – now in his sixth year at the helm – was recognized for his success as he took home his second-straight North Central Region Coach of the Year award. Read more on UNW's postseason accolades here.

The Eagles from Judson University – a NAIA member located in Elgin, Ill. – enter the weekend 15-15. They are led by Jayla Barrett, who is scoring 13.3 points per game, while pulling down over five boards per contest. Kelli Ludwig (10.8) is also averaging double figures. Ludwig, who recently reached the 1,000-point milestone, is a 38 percent shooter from long range. Judson is led by fourth-year head coach Kristi Cirone, a former Division I standout at Illinois State and WNBA player.
