UMAC hands out weekly awards to Studer, Sutterer & Bostrom

ST. PAUL – Three University of Northwestern student-athletes were named the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Player of the Week for their sport or division on Tuesday after notable performances throughout last week's action.

TJ Studer (Perham, Minn/Perham) was voted the UMAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week. Studer earned complete game shutout versus North Central University on Tuesday of last week, striking out 10 Rams batters in a three-hitter for the senior. Studer currently has a 3.24 earned run average and a 2-2 record on the mound. His 25 innings pitched lead the Eagles squad.

Studer's teammate, Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka ), was chosen as the league's Baseball Player of the Week. Sutterer, a freshman, boasted a .579 batting average, .636 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging rate in five games last week, helping UNW to a 4-1 record. Sutterer's plate appearances included a pair of doubles, two home runs and eight runs batted in. To date this season, Sutterer is hitting .370 with a Northwestern-best 14 RBI and 20 hits heading into Tuesday's tripleheader at Bethany Lutheran College.

Switching playing surfaces, Northwestern sophomore Rachel Bostrom (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) earned UMAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week accolades in the same conference release. Bostrom went 3-1 in singles play while earning the same record in doubles matches last week with combined scores of 39-21 (singles) and 26-14 (doubles). Bostrom, who is the fifth UNW women's player to earn UMAC Tennis Player of the Week honors this year, is 12-6 in singles matches and 9-8 in doubles contests in 2014.
