DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team was unable to stop a scoring rally by the College of St. Scholastica, dropping an 8-0 contest on Saturday afternoon. Less than 24 hours after owning the offensive battle, the Eagles ended up on the short end of the momentum after 90 minutes of play.
UNW forced the first shot into the Saints' defense, but the favor was returned two fold before a penalty kick goal put the home team on the scoreboard at the 14:18 mark. Northwestern continued to withstand offensive pressure as three more attacks would take place before the Eagles would post another shot.
With just 3:36 remaining in the first period, St. Scholastica increased their lead to a pair with a boot into the back of the visitors' net to send the Purple and Gold facing a 2-0 deficit at halftime.
As the second half began the Eagles held strong for the first 11:47, but another Northwestern foul led to a second successful penalty kick situation for CSS. More time ticked off the clock and the visiting team on the scoreboard fended off two more shots before the Saints got on the board twice within 30 seconds to own a 5-0 lead.
Before all was said and done, UNW would see three more goals be posted, ending the game in a 8-0 fashion. In sum, the home squad led the shot tally with a 25 total while the Eagles found five opportunities to force scoring.
