Points aplenty in Eagles' 110-100 win over Buena Vista

Box Score

STORM LAKE, Iowa – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team hit the century mark for the first time in 15 years on Saturday en route to a 110-100 nonconference victory over Buena Vista University. The Eagles had five different players score in double figures as UNW won an arms race that improved Northwestern's season record to 5-2.

The Eagles used 59 first half points to own a 13-point margin at the midway point of the game, making 51 percent of their overall shooting attempts while draining 12 of 22 three-point attempts as both Chanel Madson (Westbrook, Minn./Westbrook-Walnut Grove) and Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) made four shots from long range in the initial 20 minutes. Wearing its traditional road-purple uniforms, Northwestern owned a 10 point lead before four minutes had ticked off the clock, but Buena Vista managed to come right back to tie the game at 17-17 with 12:03 remaining in the first period. UNW went on a spree in the final seven minutes of the half, outscoring the Beavers 26-10 to own a double-digit buffer at the break.

BVU cut the Eagles' edge to two on a three-pointer by Susan Kies five minutes into the second half before a Lacy Vokt lay-up knotted the score at 81-18 with 9:12 to play. While Madson cooled off, Stubbs was good for another three-pointer while Mollie Sir (Cresco, Iowa/Crestwood) added four second half treys of her own to help keep the home team at bay down the stretch. Buena Vista was still within range of Northwestern at 99-95 as 1:37 remained on the clock, but Sir and Jessica Fife (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) made key baskets down the stretch with the Eagles converting on five of their final six free throws to win by 10.

In addition to its hot shooting, Northwestern turned 14 Beavers turnovers into 17 points throughout the afternoon. Sir finished with a game-high 25 points while Fife collected a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Both Courtney Cunard (Missouri Valley, Iowa/Missouri Valley) and Stubbs recorded new career highs, scoring 17 and 15 points, respectively.

Northwestern's 110 points was the most in school history since Nov. 13, 1998 when the Eagles last hit triple digits in a victory over North Central University (Minn.). Saturday's game was also the first time in over 10 years that UNW allowed 100 or more points.

The Eagles will continue to take their show on the road next week when UNW heads north for yet another nonconference contest on Tuesday at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
