Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Northwestern rode a 60-rebound performance to a 70-46 victory over St. Joseph's College Tuesday afternoon, participating in the New Year's Ball hosted by Colorado College. Leading by just five at the half, the Eagles capitalized upon a 19-point advantage in the final 20 minutes to secure the final outcome.
It took 3:40 for UNW to see its first points up on the board, but layups from
Jessica Fife (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) and
Chanel Madson (Westbrook, Minn./Westbrook-Walnut Grove) allowed the Eagles to take their first lead of the contest, 4-3. The scoring continued to come slowly through the beginning of the game even with Northwestern kick-starting an 11-0 run . The visitors from St. Joseph began to see offensive success of its own, tying the score at 20-20 with 5:33 left in the period.
Another run, this time a 7-0 margin allowed the Purple and Gold to yet again hold an advantage of 27-20 with just over three minutes ticking off the clock. As the buzzer sounded, both teams headed to the locker room with Northwestern up 33-28.
The crew from Snelling Avenue North started its big second-half with the Lady Bears doing anything but rolling over, as the game was within three twice in the early minutes. Thankfully for the Eagles, the period didn't finish as it started, and thanks to a 15-0 run the lead reached double digits. The two squads exchanged buckets with the scoreboard still in favor of UNW as the minutes passed by.
The largest lead Northwestern would hold besides the final score was 24 points at the 2:38 timestamp courtesy of a pair of free-throw makes by
Kim Campbell (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy). A final layup by Emily VanLith sealed the final reading and allowed the Eagles to earn their seventh win of the 2013-14 campaign by a 70-46 outcome.
Northwestern was led by a well-rounded scoring effort that featured Tiffany Stubb's 12 points while teammate
Hannah Holm (Charlotte, N.C./GRACE School) added 11 of her own.
The Eagles' biggest advantage came in rebounding, as the squad totaled 60 boards, its highest mark in at least the past two years. Fife notched 16 of those, including 10 on the defensive end of the floor.
Next up for UNW is its first contest of the 2014 calendar year as the team participates in its second day of the holiday classic on Wednesday, taking on the host institution of Colorado College at 3 p.m.
