Shooting woes doom Eagles vs. Wis.-Superior

Box Score

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Northwestern women's basketball team ran into a physical University of Wisconsin-Superior team on Tuesday night as the Yellow Yackets sent UNW back to St. Paul with a 77-52 loss, dropping the Eagles to 5-3 in their 2013-14 campaign. Chanel Madson (Westbrook, Minn./Westbrook-Walnut Grove) had 16 points for the Purple and Gold, but the remaining four starters were only able to contribute 19 combined points in the loss.

Freshman Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian), who made a splash with her 5-6 shooting performance from behind the three-point line in Northwestern's 110-100 victory over Buena Vista last Saturday, kept the Eagles in Tuesday's nonconference affair early, draining a three-pointer before getting fouled on another long range jumper and making all three free throws. Madson also made good on three straight attempts at the charity stripe to give the Eagles a brief 19-17 lead before Super responded in a big way. Six different Yellow Jackets scored during a 13-0 run and the home team on the scoreboard found itself leading 30-23 at the halftime break.

Despite made threes from Madson and Courtney Cunard (Missouri Valley, Iowa/Missouri Valley), Superior continued its offensive pressure in the paint with several layups that widened the gap at 48-31. Stubbs was good for back-to-back downtown makes with 10:26 to go, but the Yellow Jackets' lead was insurmountable as UW-Superior ended with a 25-point victory.

Northwestern made just over 26 percent of its attempts on the night, 15 percent lower than their opponent from the north. Of the 14 baskets that the Eagles made, nine came from outside the three-point line. Superior owned a 10-board rebounding edge while forcing UNW into 18 turnovers on the night.

Stubbs finished with 12 points as did Cunard, while the Eagles' leading scorer in Mollie Sir (Cresco, Iowa/Crestwood) was held to 1-5 shooting with the senior scoring a mere two points.

Sally Linzmeier had 16 points to lead Superior, while Hadley Skalmoski grabbed eight rebounds to go with seven points for the now-3-4 Yellow Jackets.

Northwestern will try to shake Tuesday's loss off in a pair of practices on Wednesday and Thursday before the Eagles return to their home court in the Ericksen Center for a 5:30 p.m. game against visiting Luther College on Friday.
