WBK: Offense comes up short in UNW loss to Gustavus

Box Score

ST. PETER, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team returned to the court after a brief Thanksgiving break and struggled to get things rolling offensively, shooting just .274 on the contest to drop a 75-53 matchup versus Gustavus Adolphus College Saturday afternoon. The Gusties doubled UNW's rate around the hoop with a .533 finish to take a 36-22 lead at the half.

Northwestern led first, as Chanel Madson (Westbrook, Minn./Westbrook-Walnut Grove) put the first score on the board with a free throw make. The two teams exchanged buckets but nearly halfway through the period the home team had extended its margin to 17-9 as a result of a 7-0 run. The momentum continued to move in the Gusties' favor, and the team would lead by at least nine for the remainder of the period.

The first 20 minutes of action saw Gustavus own a 12-0 advantage in the paint, while also converting 13 points off UNW turnovers.

The second half featured much of the same storyline, with the home team on the board holding the upper hand in double digits. Jessica Fife (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) brought the game within 14 as a result of her layup, but another offensive flurry by Gustavus would send the lead back to 20 before much time had elapsed.

|The Purple and Gold found more success on its end of the floor in the final period besting its first half mark with a .303 posting, but the Gustie lead proved to be too much, ending the game with the final outcome standing at 75-53.

Madson led all UNW players with 21 points, while Courtney Cunard (Missouri Valley, Iowa/Missouri Valley) chipped in 13 of her own. Hannah Holm (Charlotte, N.C./GRACE School) collected seven boards in 25 minutes of action, contributing to 33 for the squad.

Northwestern's Saturday performance leaves the team at a 4-2 overall record. The next contest for the Eagles will take place on Saturday, December 7 as they travel south to Storm Lake, Iowa for a 2 p.m. matchup with Buena Vista University.
