Augsburg hands UNW 1-0 loss

Box Score MINNNEAPOLIS – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team withstood numerous Augsburg College shots on Tuesday night, but the one that went through the posts sent the Eagles home on the low end of a 1-0 final score. In UNW's first night game of the year, the squad fended off 23 attacks throughout 90 minutes of play.

The opening minutes featured mostly the Auggies' offense with a few Eagle returns scattered in the run. Each team exchanged possession of momentum until the clock struck 18:14 and Ben Henry netted the one and only goal of the game in favor of the home team. The Purple and Gold would return the favor with three more boots towards goal in the remainder of the period, but none of the shots proved to be successful.

Facing a 1-0 deficit, UNW took the field again and help up on defense as Augsburg increased its attack total from the first half. The Eagles' first offensive push of the period came at the 62:15 point of the game and would be followed by six more shots, all of which ended unsuccessfully.

Northwestern's (4-8 overall, 4-2 conference) back line notched five saves throughout 90 minutes of action, all of which were credited to Shane Coleman (Wyoming, Minn./Homeschool) in goal. The key factor in the outcome proved to be the difference in offensive opportunities, as the home team totaled 24 over the course of the matchup. In contrast, UNW secured 13 chances including seven on goal.

The squad will return to its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) portion of the schedule on Friday, October 11 versus North Central University. Friday will feature a 1 p.m. home game for the Eagles, while Saturday's contest against the same opponent will be played on the road.
