ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team held strong, but the College of St. Scholastica ended Friday's contest the victor in a 4-0 fashion. The Eagles battled throughout the 90 minutes of play and was down just one score at the half, but a trio of goals gave the Saints the upper hand as time ran out.
St. Scholastica made its presence known early, scoring at the 5:59 mark before Northwestern had been able to post an offensive attack. The Saints continued to pressure throughout the period with the Eagles notching three shots, all to be fended off by the visitors.
CSS would wind the first period down with a 7-3 shot advantage and a 1-0 lead amidst a game that saw both teams battling to earn momentum.
The second period began in much of the same way the first ended, however at the 59:10 point a header goal by the Saints doubled the lead security. Fast forward to the 81:34 time stamp and another score was put on the board in favor of the Duluth, Minn. visitors to increase the margin to three. St. Scholastica would once again find the back of the net in a penalty kick situation to end the game at the 4-0 score in favor of CSS.
Although the Eagles were unable to tally a shot in the second 45 minutes of action, the squad totaled three saves, with
Shane Coleman (Wyoming, Minn./Homeschool) ending the contest with six overall.
Jeremy Zeis (Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley) led the way on offense for the Purple and Gold as he earned credit for both of UNW's shots on goal.
Northwestern (6-9-0 overall, 6-3 conference) will seek to get back in the win column on Saturday as the team will host Northland College in its final home game of regular season. A start time of 2:15 p.m. is set for the matchup, which will be played at Reynolds Field
