Box Score
ST. PAUL – Northwestern College suffered its second consecutive defeat on Wednesday night, losing to the University of Wisconsin-Superior 76-55 in the Ericksen Center. The Eagles fall to 2-3 on the season following the nonconference setback.
NWC matched Superior point for point to start the game as
Courtney Cunard (Missouri Valley, Iowa/Missouri Valley)'s jumper at 11:54 in the first half tied the score at 11-11. Things quickly went south from there for the Eagles, as the Yellowjackets went on a 15-0 run over the course of the next four minutes to lead 26-11. After
Chanel Madson (Westbrook, Minn./Westbrook-Walnut Grove) briefly stopped the bleeding with a two-point basket, Superior was at it again, boosting its lead to 19 with 4:17 left in the period. This time, Northwestern answered with a spree of its own, scoring seven straight points to cut the margin to 12 at 32-20. Each team traded a couple free throw opportunities, and the Jackets went into halftime with a 34-21 advantage.
Superior came out of the break hungry, increasing its lead to 17 and then 22 on layups from Kristen Nett and Sally Lindzmeier.
Mollie Sir (Cresco, Iowa/Crestwood) and Cunard came back with consecutive three-pointers for the Eagles, but Northwestern was never able to get within reach of the visitors as time expired with the Yellowjackets winning 76-55.
The Yellowjackets took advantage of their size under the hoop throughout the entire game, earning 13 more rebounds and 16 more points in the paint when compared to NWC. The Eagles finished 17-47 (36.2 percent) from the field while going just five of 17 from behind the three-point line. Superior (3-1) countered with a 50.9 shooting rate, making 11 more field goals than Northwestern.
Madson had 12 points to lead NWC, going 4-8 on the night while Cunard added 10 points and five rebounds. Superior's Lindzmeier led all players with 24 points, while Deandra Vavra brought down 11 boards.
Now 2-3 on the year, Northwestern will look to regroup before playing another nonconference game on Friday against Buena Vista University. The Eagles and Beavers will tip off at 5:30 p.m. in the Ericksen Center.
