Eagle comebacks not enough in 70-54 loss to Augsburg

Box Score MINNEAPOLIS – The Northwestern College women's basketball team dropped a non-conference matchup to Augsburg College on the road Monday night finishing on the lower end of the 70-54 margin. The Eagles took one lead at the 14:30 mark of the first half but were unable to capitalize on the advantage as the Auggies maintained control throughout the majority of the 40 minutes of play.

Augsburg got off to a quick start on its home court, gaining an upper hand on NWC less than a minute into play. The Eagles first got on the board after a Jessica Fife (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) made basket, but the home team kept capitalizing on offense, getting out in front of Northwestern by as much as eight points five minutes after the opening whistle. The visitors responded, however, and tied the game at 14-14 after Kim Campbell (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) netted a three-point shot. Fellow freshman Courtney Cunard (Missouri Valley, Iowa/Missouri Valley)  took advantage of an Auggie miss from behind the arc and scored in the paint, giving NWC the lead at 10:18. Following a scoring drought of over three minutes, Augsburg quickly regained the lead and stretched it out to eight points before Northwestern chipped it down to six at the half.

Following intermission, the Auggies held on to possession of the game, but a pair of long-range makes courtesy of Mollie Sir (Cresco, Iowa/Crestwood) and Hannah Holm (Charlotte, N.C./GRACE School) in conjunction with a Fife layup kept NWC in the game, matching the home team's 39 points at the 17:13 mark. The Eagles were able to sustain consistent scoring from Augsburg as they continued to cut into the lead, but the Auggies responded by securing the advantage throughout the rest of the half. With just under 5:30 remaining in regulation, Chanel Madson (Westbrook, Minn./Westbrook-Walnut Grove) notched a three of her own, bringing the game within four, but as theme of the night continued, the home team held off any visitor offensive runs, eventually ending the game at 70-56.

Northwestern shot 37.5% from the field in comparison to Augsburg's 41.2 mark, but the Eagles earned the upper hand in three point percentage, making 31.6% of their attempts in contrast with the Auggie's 16.7%. Another bright spot for the Purple and Gold was its free-throw percentage, as the team went 14-16 from the charity stripe. The Achilles' heel of the game, however, proved to be NWC's 24 turnovers which translated into 31 home team points.

Fife led NWC in scoring with 19 points, posting nearly a double-double with eight rebounds. Sir picked up her fourth double-digit game of the 2012-2013 campaign as she tallied 12 points of her own in 34 minutes of play.

After a quick day of practice, Northwestern will return home to the Ericksen Center after being on the road for the past two contests. The Eagles will play host to the University of Wisconsin-Superior in the early slot of Wednesday's double-header, tipping off at 5:30 p.m. Both live stats and video will be available for the matchup.
