Box Score ST. PAUL – In its first road game of the season, the Northwestern College women's basketball team came out with a win, outscoring host Macalester College 59-50.
As has been the trend in the young season so far, NWC earned an early lead courtesy of offensive plays by
Chanel Madson (Westbrook, Minn./Westbrook-Walnut Grove),
Mollie Sir (Cresco, Iowa/Crestwood),
Hannah Holm (Charlotte, N.C./GRACE School), and
Kim Campbell (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy). The visitors held the advantage for the majority of the first half before Macalester began chipping away the 25-17 deficit with 4:16 left in the period. The Scots rallied to earn their first lead of the game with just under three minutes remaining before regulation and one-upped Northwestern heading into halftime, 20-29.
The second half saw a change in momentum from the end of the first 20 minutes as the Eagles gained back their lead at the 15:29 mark off a
Courtney Cunard (Missouri Valley, Iowa/Missouri Valley) jumper. The run continued as Madson posted back-to-back makes, including one from behind the arc, to move the score to 39-33 in favor of the Purple and Gold. As time ticked off the clock, Northwestern was able to maintain control of the game, keeping the lead above five points for the better part of the final 20 minutes.
Even amidst the offensive flow on the Northwestern end of the court, Macalester brought the game within four points at the 2:40 mark, but clutch free-throw shooting from NWC secured the ball game. In the final 2:08 alone, the visiting team went 7-8 from the charity stripe to secure a 59-50 victory.
Madson led all scorers with 15 points, closely followed by Sir's 14-point performance.
Jessica Fife (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) was dominant on boards, tallying three offensive and eight defensive rebounds in 35 minutes of play for a game-high 11.
As a group, the Eagles shot 39.2% from the field and 43.8% from three-point range, going 7-16 from behind the arc. The team held the upper hand in assists while also committing 16 turnovers as opposed to Macalester's 18. Northwestern also earned advantages in field goal, three-point, and free throw percentage, as Its performance from the line proved to be the deciding factor as the clock hit zero on Tuesday night.
Following a weekend of rest, Northwestern (2-1) will take on Augsburg College in Minneapolis in a 7 p.m. evening game on Monday night. NWC will return home to the Ericksen Center for their third home contest of the year on Wednesday, November 28, playing host the University of Wisconsin-Superior in the 5:30 p.m. doubleheader matchup.
