Women's Hoops haunted by cold shooting at Northland

Box Score ASHLAND, Wis. -- What was a two-point Northland College lead over Northwestern College on Friday night turned into an eight- to ten-point advantage for the LumberJills and the Eagles couldn't recover as Northland claimed an important 52-40 UMAC victory. The LumberJills scored 22 points off of 18 NWC turnovers while holding the Eagles to a 32 percent shooting rate en route to the win.

Neither team came out of the gate hot, as a layup by Chanel Madson (Westbrook, Minn./Westbrook-Walnut Grove) gave Northwestern just its seventh point of the game as the halfway point of the first period turned a corner. Northland answered Madson's score on an Ashley Runge jumper before Maria Mackey's free throws put the home team ahead 22-13 with 3:42 to go in the first half. Mollie Sir (Cresco, Iowa/Crestwood) hit an important three-pointer to bring the Eagles within six before Sam Stanfield's layup in the paint gave Northland a 24-16 lead as each team went into its respective locker room.

Runge made a layup early in the second half to boost the LumberJills' lead to double digits before back-to-back threes from Madson gave NWC some daylight at 29-25. Just two minutes later, Madson hit a pair of free throws to close the gap at 31-29, but Mackey hit a three to spark a seven point Northland run. Northwestern couldn't get any closer than six the rest of the way out, and the LumberJills won by a 12-point margin.

NWC made just six shots throughout the entire first half and 14 for the game to finish at 32 percent, while Northland was 18-46 for 39 percent in the rather low scoring affair. Madson finished with a team-high 17 points, making all three of her three-point attempts while going a perfect 6-6 at the free throw line. Sir added nine points while Jessica Fife (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) and Kasie Shoberg (Chisago City, Minn./Chisago Lakes) each collected seven rebounds.

Mackey led all players with 18 points for Northland, who also received a 10-point, seven-rebound performance from Lulu Seelye.

Now 5-10 on the season, Northwestern won't have long to mentally prepare for Saturday afternoon, when the Eagles head back west to take on the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
