Men's Soccer scores, but takes 2-1 defeat from St. Thomas

Box Score

ST. PAUL – Northwestern College scored its first goal of the 2011 season, but the Eagles lost their third consecutive game on Monday afternoon to the University of St. Thomas in 2-1 fashion.

Stephen Ricks (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) (Blaine, Minn./Blaine), NWC's speedy forward, sent a bending bullet into the upper left corner of the goal from 20 yards out to give the Eagles their first points at the 81:03 mark of the game. But Northwestern was already down 2-0 at that point, as St. Thomas' Mike Hutton scored two goals for the Tommies to account for the one-goal differential between the two teams at the end of the game.

Hutton's first goal came in the 12th minute as his lob shot over Northwestern's Eric Bocan (Anoka, Minn./Meadow Creek) (Anoka, Minn./Meadow Creek) found the net from 15 yards out. After the Tommies held a 1-0 halftime lead, Hutton struck again just 20 seconds into the second period to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage.

St. Thomas posted seven shots on goal to the Eagles' three.  Bocan was credited with both Tommie goals in front of Northwestern's goal. Josh Olson (Ukarumpa, Papua New Guinea/Ukarumpa Int'l) (Ukarumpa, Papua New Guinea/Ukarumpa International) had two saves in 45 minutes of work, all of which came in the second half.

Northwestern, now 0-3 early in the 2011 campaign, gets a few days off after playing three games within five days. Next on the Eagles' schedule is Hamline University on Saturday, September 10 in St. Paul at the Pipers' home field. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
