Box Score NEW ULM, Minn. -- Scoring both of the Eagles' goals in Thursday's UMAC contest between Northwestern College and Bethany Lutheran College wasn't enough for
Sam Mann (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Central) (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Central) as the junior added another game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Martin Luther College on Saturday afternoon.
Clayton Athman (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) got things started for the Eagles, scoring his first goal of the season in the game's seventh minute to put NWC up 1-0 early. Martin Luther's Ben Nommensen equaled the score just before halftime with a shot that went past NWC's
Eric Bocan (Anoka, Minn./Meadow Creek) (Anoka, Minn./Meadow Creek) at the 42:55 mark.
Then came Mann's unassisted game winner in the 63rd minute before the Eagles defense took care of the rest in preserving the one-goal win.
Northwestern controlled the ball for most of the game, getting 38 shots off compared to just seven for the Knights. The Eagles kept Martin Luther goalkeeper Ben Zietlow busy with 16 shots on goal throughout the afternoon. NWC's Bocan needed just one save to earn the victory.
Now 3-5 overall in 2011 (2-1 UMAC), Northwestern will face Bethel University in Arden Hills on Monday at 4 p.m. before hosting the College of St. Scholastica next Friday, September 30 at 2 p.m. at Reynolds Field.
