Eagles stage comeback to earn seventh straight win

Box Score

ASHLAND, Wis. -- Allison Johnson (Plymouth, Minn./Heritage Christian)'s (Plymouth, Minn./Heritage Christian Academy) free throws with just under six minutes to play broke a 50-50 tie, and a pair of successful attempts from the charity stripe from Megan Myhre (Barnum, Minn./Barnum) (Barnum, Minn./Barnum) solidified Northwestern College's 66-63 victory over Northland College.  Down by 12 points midway through the first half, the Eagles rallied to lead 34-32 at halftime before hanging on to to a slim three-point margin as the final buzzer sounded.

The victory was Northwestern's seventh straight and the team's third consecutive road win, creating a three-game gap between the second place-Eagles and their nearest competitor below them in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) standings.  At 8-2 in league play (12-9 overall), NWC remains two games behind the conference's top team in the University of Minnesota, Morris, who the Eagles will welcome to the Ericksen Center next Saturday afternoon.

Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) scored 28 points for the second straight day, adding nine rebounds in the win.  DeWitt turned a one-point Northland lead into a two-point advantage for Northwestern at the end of the first half with back-to-back jumpers.  Mollie Sir (Cresco, Iowa/Crestwood) (Cresco, Iowa/Crestwood) finished 5-6 from the floor and a perfect 3-3 from behind the three-point line for 13 points, while Johnson chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.  As a team, Northwestern shot 47 percent on the day, almost identical to the LumberJills' 48 percent mark.

With turnovers at a minimum in the game (a combined total of 15 between the two teams), defense and rebounding was essential.  NWC won the battle of the boards by 15 while grabbing 12 offensive rebounds, compared to just four for Northland (11-10, 5-5 UMAC).

The LumberJills' LuLu Seelye countered DeWitt's performance with 30 points of her own, going 11-16 overall and 6-8 from downtown.

Capping off a three-game week, the Eagles will rest and practice in the upcoming days until Friday, February 11, when Presentation College comes to campus to kick off another UMAC weekend.  Tip-off will take place at 5:30 p.m.
