Victory over St. Scholastica is sixth straight win for Women's Hoops

Box Score

DULUTH, Minn. -- Behind Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial)'s (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) double-double, the Northwestern College women's basketball team earned its sixth consecutive victory on Friday night with a 62-54 win over the College of St. Scholastica.

After a back-and-forth battle in the game's first half, Northwestern was able to establish an eight-point lead in the period's final two minutes before the two teams went into the locker room with the scoreboard reading 32-26 in NWC's favor.  Early in the second half, the Eagles led by nine after Megan Myhre (Barnum, Minn./Barnum) took advantage of an opportunity at the free throw line.  The advantage didn't last though, as the Saints cut the edge to three before taking the lead on a Kayla Helsler three-pointer with 4:47 to play.  Northwestern reclaimed the lead within the final 2:30 and made the most of its free throw opportunities down the stretch to hang on to the eight-point victory.

Neither team had its best shooting performance of the night.  NWC finished the game at 35 percent, while St. Scholastica came in at just over 32 percent from the floor.  Much of the Eagles' success started under the hoop where Northwestern posted a 47-35 rebounding advantage.  The Purple and Gold also had 22 points off of CSS turnovers.

DeWitt led all scorers with 28 points and 11 rebounds.  Kristin Sczublewski (Pierz, Minn./Pierz) (Pierz, Minn./Pierz) added nine rebounds while Allison Johnson (Plymouth, Minn./Heritage Christian) (Plymouth, Minn./Heritage Christian Academy) grabbed 10 boards.

Bri Allen had 19 points to lead the Saints (7-13, 4-5 UMAC), adding six rebounds.

Now 11-9 overall (7-2 UMAC), the Eagles will look to continue not only their current winning streak, but their mark of consecutive road victories, which currently stands at two.  NWC will match up with Northland College in Ashland, Wis. on Saturday afternoon.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
