Eagles nearly double-up Crown in UMAC opener

Box Score

ST. PAUL -- Northwestern College won its second consecutive game on Tuesday night with a convincing 82-42 victory over Crown College. The victory puts the Eagles in the win column to begin both teams' Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) schedule. Everyone in a purple and gold jersey saw action on the court for Aaron Kahl's crew while Mollie Sir (Cresco, Iowa/Crestwood) (Cresco, Iowa/Crestwood) logged the most minutes at 20.

It didn't take long for NWC to establish its pace of play, as the Eagles boasted leads of 12-3 and 22-6 within the game's first 12 minutes. By the time Northwestern hit the 40-point threshold, Crown was well behind with 11 points. After a 48-11 halftime lead, several reserves saw considerable time on the court, including Becca Kendrick (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy), who finished 4-8 for nine points.

Crown nearly tripled its output in the second half, nearly matching NWC's 34 points in the period. But the Eagles had the score well out of reach for the Storm en route to a 40-point victory.

Sir and Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) each had 16 points to lead the team, with DeWitt pulling down a Northwestern-best nine rebounds. Tanya Dickey (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) added 11 points in 13 minutes, while Allison Johnson (Plymouth, Minn./Heritage Christian) (Greenfield, Minn./Heritage Christian Academy) had 10 points and nine boards, six of which were on offense. As a team, the Eagles shot 43 percent while holding Crown to 31 percent.

Judy Mundt posted 23 points for the Storm, making eight of her 19 shots.

The Eagles had 19 assists on Tuesday night while scoring 35 points on 34 Crown turnovers.

Northwestern, now 5-7 on the season (1-0 UMAC), will practice for a couple days before taking its annual “west coast” trip this weekend. The Eagles will play the University of Minnesota, Morris on Friday at 5 p.m. in Morris before going even farther west to Aberdeen, S.D., where they will face Presentation College at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
