Augsburg clips Eagles, 4-0

MINNEAPOLIS – It only took 37 seconds for the Northwestern men's soccer team to fall behind on the road as they fell to Augsburg College, 4-0, in non-conference action at Edor Nelson Field.

Augsburg's Jeff Butler notched his first goal of the season in the game's first minute off of a rebound of a shot by Matt Bowman, as Northwestern struggled to produce offensive chances against a talented Augsburg squad.

Eagles goalkeeper Josh Niedermayer (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) did record five saves alongside three Augsburg goals in the first half before yielding to a combination of sophomore Josh Olson (Ukarumpa, Papua New Guinea/Ukarumpa Int'l) (Ukarumpa, Papua New Guinea/Ukarumpa Int'l) and freshman Kenny Francis (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul). The underclassmen combined to allow only one second half goal and recorded five saves.

After quickly going up 1-0, Augsburg's Chad Gilmer recorded his fourth goal of the season at 10:13. Peter Loyd scored off of a corner kick at 29:59 as the Eagles found a 3-0 deficit at half.

The Eagles' defense hung tough in the second half, conceding only a single goal to Gottlieb Uahengo in the 70th minute.

For Northwestern on offense, sophomore forward Jeremy Stiner (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) led the Eagles with three shots. Substitutions Lucas Asmus (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) and Joshua Wright (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) each recorded shots in a forgettable match.

The Eagles return to action at home on Friday as they host Bethany Lutheran College at Reynolds Field. Game time is set for 4 p.m., the second half of a doubleheader with the women starting at 2 p.m.
