Babinec leads Martin Luther past Eagles

Box Score

ST. PAUL -- The Northwestern College women's basketball team wasn't able to rebound from a 10-point win on Friday night, as the Eagles fell victim to Martin Luther College on Saturday afternoon. Neither team was able to shoot well in the game, but Martin Luther scored 24 points off of 23 NWC turnovers to win 71-61.

Kaelee Kendrick (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) was the lone Eagle who appeared to be able to put the ball in the hoop, as the senior went 6-11 for 12 points. Kendrick fell just one rebound shy of a double-double, ending the game with nine boards. Despite a rare off-night for Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial), the Eagles' leading scorer this season was still able to record 11 points and 13 points for a double-double.

For the game, Northwestern shot 31.7 percent. Martin Luther, who didn't make any of its 13 three-point attempts in the game, wasn't much better at 36 percent. Eagles head coach Linda Schuck saw 26 of her team's 61 points come from nonstarters.

Tanya Dickey (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) and Megan Myhre (Barnum, Minn./Barnum) (Barnum, Minn./Barnum) each scored 10 points in the game for Northwestern. Myhre, who has been an asset to the team's front court efforts this year, hauled in six offensive rebounds and eight boards overall.

Martin Luther's Erica Babinec was a pain in Northwestern's side all day, as she finished the 40-minute affair with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Although Babinec went 7-17 from the field, the sophomore got to the free throw line plenty, making 13 of her attempts at the charity stripe.

With the loss, Northwestern slips to 12-8 overall (7-3 UMAC), while Martin Luther improves to 8-12 overall and 4-6 in UMAC play. The Eagles will try to regroup in practice next week before hitting the road. To have a shot at the UMAC conference title, Northwestern will have to beat Northland College in Ashland, WIs. on Friday, Feb. 12 before facing the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday, Feb. 13. NWC currently stands alone in third place in the conference standings.
