Eagles win third straight, best Bethany Lutheran 66-56

ST. PAUL -- Northwestern College used a strong first half to pace itself past Bethany Lutheran College in women's basketball action Friday night in the Ericksen Center. With the team's leading scorer in Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) on the bench due to foul trouble, the Eagles rallied behind Ariel Liesch (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial)'s (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) eight first-half points to get to a 35-22 halftime lead. DeWitt picked up her season's pace to score 21 points in the second period, and the Eagles won their third straight game.

NWC held the Vikings from Bethany Lutheran to a 32 percent shooting performance while making 43 percent of its own attempts from the floor. Northwestern had three players record double-digit rebounds in the game, helping the home team out-rebound their opponents 51-44.

DeWitt led all scorers with 25 points and 10 rebounds, producing her ninth double-double of the season. Kaelee Kendrick (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) also had a double-double, grabbing 13 rebounds to go with 10 points while adding three steals and a trio of blocks to her game's resume. Allison Johnson (Plymouth, Minn./Heritage Christian) recorded double-digit rebounds for the second straight game, pulling down 12 boards on Friday night. The junior also dished out seven assists in the Eagles' win.

Bethany Lutheran's Anna Cepek posted a double-double of her own, tallying 11 points and 11 rebounds.

With the win, Northwestern improves to 7-2 in UMAC play and 12-7 overall. Bethany, who will face Crown on Saturday afternoon in St. Bonifacius, Minn., falls to 8-12 overall and 3-6 in the conference in 2009-10. NWC, who remains alone in third place in the league standings, will host Martin Luther College in a 3 p.m. matinee performance on Saturday.
