Hot-shooting second half gives St. Scholastica a 69-51 edge over NWC

Box Score

DULUTH, Minn. -- The College of St. Scholastica outscored the Northwestern College women's basketball team 40-22 in the second half of Saturday's game to defeat the Eagles 69-51. After the two teams were tied at 29 points apiece at halftime, the Saints made 52 percent of their shots and scored 11 points off NWC turnovers to coast to an 18-point win.

Northwestern led by a point after Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) made a jumper three and a half minutes into the second period. St. Scholastica followed with eight straight points to jump out to a seven-point lead that eventually ballooned to 12 with 5:34 to play, dooming the Eagles' chances down the stretch. The Saints made eight straight free throws in the game's final two minutes to account for the 69-51 final score.

DeWitt was the Eagles' lone player who hit double figures, as she ended the game with 27 points. Kaelee Kendrick (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) paced NWC with eight rebounds and seven points, but 18 team turnovers along with the Saints' hot shooting in the second half squashed any hope of the Eagles climbing the ladder in the UMAC standings.

St. Scholastica had four players score 12 points or more, including Bri Allen and Erin Morstad, who each finished with 15. Morstad didn't miss any of her seven shots throughout the game.

With the loss, Northwestern is now 12-10 on the season (7-5 UMAC), while St. Scholastica improves to 11-12 overall and 6-6 in UMAC play. The Eagles will need to regain their composure before next Friday, when NWC travels to Morris, Minn. to face the University of Minnesota, Morris, who is tied for first place in the conference with Northland College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
