ASHLAND, Wis. -- Despite going 2-10 from the field, Northland College's Lulu Seelye scored five of her seven points in the final two minutes as the LumberJills were able to escape Northwestern with a 64-60 win. Each team held the lead at one point in the game's final 1:44, but Seelye hit a three-pointer with 1:17 to go to put Northland up for good in the nail-biting finish.
Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) scored 33 points for Northwestern, but the LumberJills' 43-percent performance from downtown in addition to a 43-36 rebounding edge proved to be enough to keep the Eagles in an almost assured third place spot in the UMAC standings.
After the home team led by as much as eight points in the first half, Northwestern stormed back to initially cut Northland's lead before taking a nine-point advantage of their own in the period's final 10 minutes. NWC went into the locker room with the momentum and a 36-28 halftime lead.
Northland was able to minimize the Eagles' advantage down the stretch, and Ashley Runge's successful three-point shot with 4:18 to play gave the LumberJills a one-point lead. Melissa Waytashek and Seelye followed with three-pointers of their own, and Northland left the Eagles stunned with a four-point loss to chew on.
Northwestern had a better night in overall shooting, making 38.5 percent of their attempts. Northland made it to the free throw line 26 times in the game, easily trumping the four attempts from the charity stripe that NWC had.

Ariel Liesch (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial), who posted 13 points.
Kaelee Kendrick (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) made four of her eight shots for eight points in the game.
For Northland, Runge finished 7-13 and 4-9 from long range to total 18 points. Chelsea Lundgren chipped in 12 points, half of which came at the free throw line.
Now 12-9 overall and 7-4 in UMAC play, the Eagles have lost two straight. Saturday's 3 p.m. contest at the College of St. Scholastica will be a game that NWC will need to win in order to solidify the third spot in the conference standings. Northland stays tied with Minnesota-Morris at 10-1 in the UMAC with the win.
