ST. PAUL -- Northwestern College rebounded from a rough few games last week to post a 74-61 comeback victory over Finlandia University on Friday night. The Eagles outshot the Lions while NWC's bench scored 18 points en route to the 13-point win.
Finlandia led early in the game, posting an eight-point lead twice midway through the first half. Northwestern rallied to score nine consecutive points, giving the home team a 24-23 edge on
Mollie Sir (Cresco, Iowa/Crestwood)'s (Creco, Iowa/Crestwood) three-point shot. After Janele Linna scored a basket in the paint for the Lions, NWC added four more points to close out the period with a 28-25 advantage.
Northwestern built off of its first half comeback to increase the lead early in the second 20 minutes. A pair of made free throws by
Kristin Sczublewski (Pierz, Minn./Pierz) (Pierz, Minn./Pierz) gave the Eagles a double-digit lead five minutes into the half before a two-point jumper by
Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) allowed NWC's lead to reach 18 at 55-37. Finlandia couldn't get any closer than eight points down the stretch, and another three-pointer by Sir with 47 seconds left in the game finalized the score at 74-61.
As a team, the Eagles made 24 of their 57 attempts (42 percent) while Northwestern held the Lions to a 37 percent mark. DeWitt recorded her third double-double of the season with 26 points and 14 rebounds while Sir and Sczublewski also finished in double digits with 15 and 11 points, respectively. DeWitt, who made three shots from behind the three-point arch on the night, also had five assists while going 7-9 at the free throw line.
Allison Johnson (Plymouth, Minn./Heritage Christian) (Greenfield, Minn./Heritage Christian Academy) helped the Eagles with eight points and eight rebounds while Myhre had eight points and seven rebounds in the game.
Linna and Alyssa Erspamer each had 18 points for Finlandia, who was 7-13 from long range as a team in the second period.
With the victory, NWC improves to 2-6 overall, while the Lions fall to 1-6. The Eagles have one game left on their schedule before taking an extended break leading into the Christmas holiday as Northwestern will host Wisconsin-Superior next Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 5:30 p.m.
