MINNEAPOLIS -- Despite owning a 10-point lead early in the first half, the Northwestern College women's basketball team couldn't hold on in an eventual 70-62 loss to Augsburg College. The Eagles got into foul trouble far too soon and Augsburg's bench outscored the Purple and Gold's depleted reserve section 24-8.
NWC wasted no time to put points on the board, as a pair of three-pointers by
Kristin Sczublewski (Pierz, Minn./Pierz) (Pierz, Minn./Pierz) gave the Eagles a 10-0 lead right off the bat. Augsburg stormed back with three consecutive baskets and a pair of free throws to cut the margin to one point with 12:31 left to play in the first half.
Tanya Dickey (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) hit a three to help push Northwestern's advantage back to six, but the home team battled to take a four-point lead at 21-17 five minutes later. Two free throws broke the third tie of the game for the Auggies, who went into the locker room with a 26-24 halftime lead.
Northwestern's leading scorer in
Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) had earned her third foul of the game with over six minutes to go in the game, forcing head coach
Aaron Kahl to play without the senior. Foul No. 4 came less than a minute into the second half, taking away one of the Eagles' offensive weapons as Augsburg's lead hit double digits. The closest NWC could get to the Auggies was eight points, which was the margin of the game's 70-62 final score.
As a team, the Eagles made 25 of their 67 shots (37 percent), while Augsburg countered with a 27-69 (39 percent) performance. While NWC tallied 20 assists on the day, those marks were negated by the team's 21 turnovers.
Megan Myhre (Barnum, Minn./Barnum) (Barnum, Minn./Barnum) finished 6-11 from the field to lead NWC with 15 points and 12 rebounds, earning her first double-double of the year. DeWitt, who played a season-low 22 minutes due to the foul trouble, wrapped up her night with 16 points and six boards. Sczublewski added seven assists to her eight turnovers in 38 minutes.
Augsburg was led by Tracee Schrank, who was the only Auggie in double figures with 20 points.
Northwestern will return home for its next game this coming Friday, when the Eagles host Finlandia University. Tip-off in the Ericksen Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
