Women's Hoops falls to Minn.-Morris in battle for second place

Box Score

ST. PAUL -- The Northwestern College women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday night as the University of Minnesota, Morris bested the Eagles 70-62. Morris held a 17-8 advantage in points off of turnovers and saw its bench contribute 19 points to take sole possession of second place in the UMAC standings.

Neither team was able to leap out to a giant lead in the first half, as Morris held a 27-26 lead at the 20-minute break. After a continued back-and-forth battle throughout the second half, the Cougars took a six-point lead with 9:02 to play after Brandi Cresap nailed a two-point jumper. Northwestern cut Morris' margin to a point when Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) drained a three-pointer, but the Cougars came back with several consecutive made baskets as evidenced by their consistent eight-point lead that held until the game's end.

Northwestern made more of its attempts throughout the game, making 45 percent of its shots. Morris countered with a 39 percent performance but committed six less turnovers to show for the eight-point win.

DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) made 11 field goals and all six of her free throw attempts to produce the senior's third straight 30-point game. Add her 14 rebounds, and DeWitt chalked up another double-double - her seventh of the season. No other NWC player was able to find double digits, as Kelsey Kosman (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) was the team's next highest leading scorer with eight points. The Eagles missed the defense and energy of Ashley Filipli (Fertile, Minn./Ada-Borup), who went down early in Friday's game with an injury.

Emily Mehr led Morris with 18 points on 8-13 shooting. Steph Roggenbuck added 10 points in the Cougars' win.

With the loss, Northwestern slips to 9-7 overall and 5-2 in UMAC play while Morris goes home with a 10-6 overall record and a 6-1 conference mark. The Eagles will play a nonconference game at North Central University in Minneapolis on Tuesday before returning home to face Crown College next Saturday, Jan. 30. Tuesday's game versus North Central is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
